What a configurator rule can do
Rules decide defaults, validations, components, quantities, the bill of material and routing variant, operations and what flows into sub-assemblies, and they can be written as plain sentences.
A make-to-order product is defined once and configured many times. The rules are where the engineering knowledge lives: which answers are not allowed together, which answer implies another, which parts and operations each answer brings, and which variant bill and routing it is made on.
